As we kick off this weekend after Labor Day, I was thinking that the biggest news maker would be the Sunshine State football match-up between the University of Florida and the University of Miami, but unfortunately a real hurricane, Hurricane Ike, has stolen the spotlight. While it seems that every week we have a reason to talk about the lively tropics, this hurricane remains well-formed and dangerous. If you haven’t already done so, please use this weekend to prepare your home and family. As a reminder, please check out the City’s Office of Emergency Management website at www.cityoforlando.net/emergency and also the Hurricane Tips Sheet created by our Public Works department on my webpage, www.cityoforlando.net/district3.
And just a quick reminder that the first Budget Public Hearing is on Monday, September 8 at 5:01 p.m. (or immediately following the City Council meeting). We will hold the second hearing next Monday, September 15 at 7:01 p.m. Both meetings will take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
I also wanted to let you know that both of these public hearings will be preceded by a “Community Budget Open House” in the City Hall Rotunda. The open houses will begin one hour before each public hearing. City finance staff and other key departments will be on-hand to distribute information and answer questions about the upcoming budget. Staff can also provide residents an estimate of their City taxes. Additionally, staff from other departments will be available to educate residents about our City and its core services. Please note that it isn’t until after the second hearing that we will formally adopt a millage rate, so please consider attending these meetings and sharing your opinion before this important vote.
Thanks for taking the time to get prepared and to get involved. Your commitment to our community is what makes this a Great City!
